19-year-old faces murder charges in Niagara Region

A teen faces second-degree murder charges in connection to the death of a man in Welland.

Paramedics and police responded to a home in the Broadway and Pietz Avenue area around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Niagara Regional Police said.

A man with life-threatening injuries was found in the home, police said.

Police said the man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sommer E. Etherden, 19, of Welland was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, police said.

Area residents can expect a continued police presence in the area while homicide detectives and the Forensic Services Unit continue the investigation.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
