A major milestone occurred in southern Ontario yesterday (September 19) as the University of Niagara Falls officially opened its doors.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the University of Niagara Falls (UNF) campus in the City of Niagara Falls, Canada  — signaling a new era for post-secondary institutions in Ontario.

Those in attendance during the ceremony were a collection of community members, new faculty members and regional dignitaries, who were then treated to tours of the brand-new campus.

“Today marks a pivotal moment in this city with the opening of a brand-new university that will be an important driver for the revitalization of Niagara Falls’ downtown core. As we open these doors, we are not simply unveiling a new institution – we are helping to shape the future of this community,” said Cyndi McLeod, CEO of Global University Systems Canada (GUS Canada) and inaugural UNF president in an official statement.

The origins of this new institution can be traced back to approval from the provincial government for an accredited campus facility in Niagara Falls.

Then in 2022, the official plan to open the UNF campus was publically revealed.

While the campus opened to a selection of students back in April of this year, its full slate of operations will begin in October, as the university will welcome approximately 1,000 students into all five of its programs, including Honours Bachelor of Business Administration, Honours Bachelor of Science — Biomedical Sciences, and Master of Arts in Digital Media and Global Communications.

“We are thrilled to officially welcome UNF home, here, to our city! The vibrant activity of students, faculty, and staff has been a welcome addition this Fall. It’s exciting to see UNF already hard at work elevating students’ lives, transforming the way education is delivered and bolstering the activity in our downtown as they do,” said Mayor Jim DiodatiCity of Niagara Falls in an official statement.
