Amazing Race Niagara rallies as fundraiser to help protect kids

People who watch the TV show The Amazing Race and think it looks like a piece of cake will get a chance to put their money where their puzzle skills and driving ability are.

The “Amazing Race Niagara” is returning May 28 and organizers are looking for 30 teams for four who believe they’re ready for the mental and physical challenges along the way.

With all funds going towards the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara, a non-profit organization which provides help to children and youth who have experienced abuse, contestants will be putting rubber to the road for a great cause.

Much like the TV show, the event is a car rally and a scavenger hunt where teams travel across Niagara Region, completing various tasks and receiving clues for the next location.

This year’s race will get the “on your mark, set, go” flag from Club Richelieu in Welland and wind their way through the region  before ending with a Finish Line Party, fit to celebrate each team’s moment of victory.

Each team is asked to raise a minimum of $800 to enter the Amazing Race with prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraising teams.

As is the case every year, contestants are encouraged to dress up – think Halloween on wheels – as everything from Super Mario to superheroes, making it one of the most colourful events of the year.

Don’t forget the cars – if a Beetle can somehow be transformed into a Batmobile, contestants should go for it because there’s also prizes for the Best Dressed Team and Best Decorated Car.

Says the centre, “While the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre provides many vital services, we receive no core government funding. We rely on the generosity of the community to support our programs and operations, through fundraising, grants and special events.”

The centre and organizers are hoping this year’s race, the ninth held, will raise $30,000.
