Armed man barricades himself in Thorold apartment: Police

There is a heavy police presence at a Thorold apartment building after a man, reportedly armed with weapons, barricaded himself inside a unit this morning.
Niagara Regional Police say officers responded to reports of an armed man near a multi-unit residential building on Front Street South shortly before 11:30 a.m.
Initial reports indicated that the suspect was allegedly armed with an edged weapon and possibly a firearm.
A confrontation between the suspect and another person reportedly took place on the street before the suspect entered the apartment building at 64 Front St., S.
Police have not indicated if anyone was injured due to the confrontation.
Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect had entered one of the apartment units and have since contained the unit and surrounding areas as a precaution.
Specialized units, including the Emergency Task Unit, Crisis Negotiators and 1 District detectives, have been called to the scene.
Authorities are advising the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
As of now, police have not confirmed whether they have made contact with the suspect or if he is armed, as initial reports suggest.
