Assault suspect punches victim, then police during Fort Erie arrest

What started as an assault and confrontation between a resident and staffer at a group living facility in Fort Erie spiraled downwards as the same suspect then allegedly assaulted the officer trying to arrest him.

When Niagara Police landed at the group home in the Eastwood Avenue and Glenolden Lane area on July 26, they learned that a male resident got angry with a female staff member.

After grabbing her wrist, spitting on her and threatening her, she hid behind a locked door that he tried to kick in, causing $500 damage.  He quickly took off on foot before the police arrived.

An officer him nearby at 8 pm and when he told the suspect he was under arrest, he decided to charge at the officer. He was brought down quickly with a taser but continued to struggle as he was being handcuffed.

After he punched the officer several times in the face, a bystander and another officer had to help subdue him. The officer and female staffer suffered minor injuries.

Jeffrey Tyler Canning, 41, of Fort Erie has been charged with:

  • Assault
  • Utter Threats
  • Mischief Under $5000
  • Assault Police with Intent to Resist Arrest
  • Engage in Conduct to Impede Performance of Justice Duties
  • Breach Probation

He was held in custody for a video bail hearing that took place at the courthouse in St. Catharines)  yesterday (July 27) but remained in custody and for a reappearance today.
