When Disney or Pixar shows an ice castle in a movie, it looks beautiful or enchanting.

For the residents of Fort Erie, especially those near Lake Erie, it was more of a nightmare over the Christmas/Boxing Day weekend as their homes – most without power – became ice prisons, leaving residents unable to drive to a safer place.

Dozens of customers found themselves trapped in the Fort Erie Walmart (750 Garrison Rd) for nearly 48 hours as they literally couldn’t get to their cars and even if they could, it was impossible to navigate the roads.

Despite Niagara Region declaring a “state of emergency’ on Dec. 23, one media outlet reported that Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop hadn’t heard from Premier Doug Ford or any members of the provincial government despite a snow emergency and massive power outages.

A Fort Erie street sign, left, looks more like an ice monster as homes were encased in ice.

Even Niagara Police were struggling, reporting that “We have officers in Fort Erie and Port Colborne who have had to sleep at our stations because the roads and weather are so bad.”

Below, Twitter user “I am Winston” braved the freezing temperatures to get video of the snow carnage in the town.
