Some Niagara-on-the-Lake residents were shocked to learn that a local Starbucks will close down later this month.

Today, management at the Starbucks located on Niagara Stone Road in the town’s Virgil neighbourhood announced that the cafe will close down for good on Oct. 17.

“We would like to thank you for being part of our store community; you are the heart of who we are at Starbucks. It has been a great pleasure to connect with you every day,” management wrote in a post shared on social media.

“We are very thankful to have played a role in your daily routine and that you have shared these movements of your life with us.”

Customers reacted with shock to the news.

“Thank you to every single wonderful human who has stood behind the bar, asked about our days, made an effort to get to know us, and watched our children grow,” one customer wrote on Instagram.

“You’ll never know how many mornings you made manageable, toddler tantrums you quelled and laughs you brought to us. Your energy made a corporate chain feel like a welcoming community space, and we’ll miss you all.”

Others said the store holds a special place in their heart, saying that it was the place where something memorable or significant happened.

“This store holds a special place in my heart, as it is where I met my soon-to-be wife. It was a wonderful moment in my life and I am forever grateful to all of my fellow partners and wonderful customers that made this place so special,” another customer wrote.

“Sad to see it go, but thankful for its memory.”

In the post, management said customers are welcome to join staff on Oct. 17 for coffee and cake to celebrate the cafe’s last day.

The closure will leave the town with just two locations–one in the Outlet Collection at Niagara and another in Old Town on Queen Street.
