Niagara has been slowly closing in on 20 craft breweries for the past year or two but there’s one community in the region that’s been Prohibition-dry when it comes to the fancy suds.

Downtown Welland is getting its first craft brewery on Sunday, June 18 – or as some will refer it to it this year, Father’s Day!

Cleverly named Bridgewater Brewery – as there’s no shortage of either bridges or water in Welland – it’s the brainchild of owners Melissa and Nick Reim while filling all the vats, kegs and cans is being handled by Alex Mountenay, the new head brewer.

“Our brewery and taproom are located here in quaint downtown Welland along the recreational canal. All beers are brewed onsite and our taproom offers 10 rotating taps, crafty cocktails, wines and a creative food menu,” say the owners. ”

“We are thrilled to have this home where our families, friends and neighbours have a place to share our love for great beer, tasty cocktails, and excellent food & culture.”

They’re very much looking forward to becoming a part of the Welland scenery. “We strive to be a community space for all of Welland and Niagara, and our goal for our brewery and taproom is to become a meeting place for locals and beer tourists alike. We can’t wait to meet you. ”

Located at 60 Niagara Street, just 40 feet from the Canal Trail, the brewery hasn’t yet posted a menu, beer list, hours or a phone number but that should up to speed very shortly.

Kelly Jones, who first mentioned the new brewery on social media, reported that “it’s amazing inside. Congrats to Melissa and Nick for their vision and hard work.”

Welland residents jumped all over the post with excitement.

Said one, “Amazing. I had no idea. Will definitely stop by on my next trip into town.”

Another wished it had come a little earlier. “Where was that place when I spent much of the end of 2022 in Welland and could have used the occasional good beer?”

Nothing but unbridled enthusiasm from another poster. “Hell yes! Welland has been a ‘brewery desert’ for way too long! Will def be checking it out.”
