The third floor of 27 Ontario Street (where the windows are open) was the site of a fire last night. The St. Catharines Fire Department said it was contained quickly but Ontario Street remained closed at both St. Paul St and King St for two hours.

A fire last night (April 3) at 27 Ontario Street in downtown St. Catharines saw the street shut down for more than two hours as firefighters and emergency crews took over the area from St. Paul St up to King St.

Niagara Police reported, “Upon arrival (at 6:35 pm), a consistent stream of thick black smoke could be seen billowing out of a third story window.”

This morning, a firefighter still on the scene for investigation told us it was contained to the third floor of the building.

An unconscious 61-year-old female found on the third floor was airlifted to hospital as the firefighters quelled the blaze two floors above The Hempire cannabis dispensary quickly. She is currently in critical condition.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Niagara Police with the assistance of the Ontario Fire Marshall and St. Catharines Fire Prevention.  Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, extension #1008429.
