The starting gun has been fired. Two groups of athletes from two eastern provinces will be the first to touch asphalt tomorrow (August 5) as the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games are set to begin this weekend.
When portions of the Newfoundland-Labrador and New Brunswick teams touch down at Niagara District Airport early in the day, they will be the first to set foot in Niagara and accordingly, have quite the greeting party awaiting them.
However, with 5,000 athletes expected, this is just the beginning. Only 140 members of Team Newfoundland-Labrador’s 400-member team will arrive and just 106 of New Brunswick’s 446-member team will be on the first flights to the region.
The first groups will be welcomed by Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley, Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik and Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Betty Disero, whose three municipalities govern the airport.
However, since Lincoln paired up with Newfoundland-Labrador in the 13-For-13 Cultural Festival, Mayor Sandra Easton will also be on hand, as will Port Colborne Mayor Bill Steele, whose city was paired with New Brunswick.
The Newfoundland flight will land first at 11:34 am while less than an hour later, the Team New Brunswick plane will touchdown on the same tarmac.
