Four Niagara area beaches deemed unfit for swimming

Four beaches in Niagara Region have been determined to be not safe for swimming because of high counts of bacteria.
The beaches are:
- Waverly Beach in Fort Erie
- Nickel Beach in Port Colborne
- Nelles Beach in Grimsby
- Lake Erie Beach in Wainfleet
The warnings come from Niagara Region Public Health which monitors the levels of E. coli along Lake Ontario and other water systems on a regular basis during the summer months.
E. coli can cause stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting and its detection also signals that other organisms that can cause health issues are present in the water.
The bacteria can be caused by sewage or animal waste in the water.
