The new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) slated for completion in 2024 is a $60 million project, as area residents know all too well.
The problem is the WLMH Foundation is just a bit shy of that target. Actually, $1.2 million shy.
Money for the construction and completion of the new Grimsby hospital is coming largely from the province. Next up, Niagara Region approved their portion in mid-June as reported by insauga.
Then the towns of Lincoln, West Lincoln and Grimsby all committed to their portion.
That leaves the community portion, which traditionally is about 10 per cent of the costs. And here’s the thing. The local community thought two decades ago that the new hospital was being built and started fund-raising. That money has been sitting in the bank for 20 years.
Leaving the not-exactly-small amount of $1.2 million. To that end, the WLMH Foundation has recruited local investment management and financial planning professional Andrew Smith to head up the fundraising campaign, dubbed “Take It To The Finish.”
The present West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) was built in 1943 and while it may have served its constituents well decades ago, many say that it’s in been desperate need of expansion for many years. It is also the closest hospital to the east end of Hamilton, the Stoney Creek area.
The new WLMH will be built on land directly behind the present hospital. The Region will be issuing the tender of construction of the new hospital sometime in early-2022.
