Historically-significant military statue stolen from Niagara Falls cemetery

Someone – or more likely, several people – have stolen a military-significant statue from a Niagara Falls cemetery.

Niagara Police estimate that sometime between the morning of September 27 and 29, suspects somehow stole a bronze statue of Lieutenant General Drummond from the Drummond Hill Cemetery on Lundy’s Lane near Drummond Road.

Even the police acknowledge the theft would have been “labour intensive, possibly involving a vehicle to transport the statue.”

That’s because the statue is roughly three feet long, three feet high and about a foot wide. Besides being awkward, it is also 330 pounds and placed on top of a concrete pedestal that is more than five feet high.

Police say the value of the statue is estimated at over $10,000.

“Metal recyclers are asked to be on the lookout for the statue and to contact the police to report anything suspicious.”

Mark Richardson, the city’s Manager of Cemeteries Services, weighed in on the theft, asking for the public’s assistance in locating the statue of Lieutenant-General Drummond.

“The statue is historically significant,” Richardson added, “commemorating Lieutenant-General Drummond who commanded forces in Niagara during the Battle of Lundy’s Lane.”
