“For Sale: In the heart of Thorold, this 20,000-square-foot single-family dwelling comes with zero bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Very tall, colourful windows and high ceilings. Can be yours for $1,599,000.”
Granted, when that single-family dwelling is a church – Trinity United Church, to be precise – the lack of bedrooms starts to make sense. Suffice it to say, there’s plenty of indoor seating, as well.
The community was surprised when the property at 15 Pine St. South suddenly appeared in the real estate section 17 days ago. That said, it did take a few days before people noticed.
The listing by local RE/MAX brokerage, Mark Woehrle, described the church thusly. “Located in downtown Thorold, this unique property sits on a deep 362-foot lot, offering R/3 Multi Residential zoning for future redevelopment.”
Heritage Thorold says, “It is the oldest church continuously used for worship In Thorold,” having been built in 1849.
The listing noted, “Currently used as a Church, Community Centre, Gym, and Theatre. Multi-level additions have been added in more recent years with office space, meeting rooms, kitchens, several washrooms (including handicapped), gym/theatre, utility and storage rooms with updated HVAC (heating-air conditioning), and ample exterior parking.”
Granted, the building has been granted historical designation, meaning if the buyer plans on converting it to another use, the exterior has to remain intact. Those designations can be overturned but not easily.
The listing touches on that by noting, “This rare property with ideal zoning will bring infinite opportunities for development while maintaining the historic exterior beauty of the main church, more than 174 years old.”
Other noteworthy mentions in the listing include the exterior finish (“Aluminum siding, Stone, Vinyl siding”). parking spots (20), a 36-by-17-foot loft on the top floor, and, of course, because it’s a church, the 2022 tax bill was $0.
