The running joke has long been that there are four seasons in Ontario – autumn, winter, spring and construction.
It’s no exception in Niagara Region as extensive road reconstruction and repaving is already underway with more to follow through the summer.
This year the Region will invest almost $78 million into this program and has identified more than 66 lane kilometres of roads to be resurfaced and rehabilitated.
- Reconstruction of Dominion Road (Regional Road 1) from Helena Street to Lakeshore Road in Fort Erie is underway
- Intersection Improvements at Thorold Stone Road (Regional Road 57) – Roundabout at Victoria Avenue and Bridge Street (Regional Road 43) in Niagara Falls is underway
- Glendale Ave (Regional Road 89) Diverging Diamond Interchange, in partnership with Ministry of Transportation in Niagara-on-the-Lake, is underway
- Reconstruction of Pelham Road (Regional Road 69) Phase 3 from Wessel Drive to Eighth Avenue in Lincoln is underway
- Road resurfacing will start June 20 in Thorold on Highway 20 (Regional Road 20), along the S-Bend east of the Allanburg Bridge from Centre Street to railroad tracks, west of Allanport Road (Regional Road 82). Drivers are advised to take alternate routes if possible and avoid the area during peak travel times
This past winter was particularly difficult on roads in our community with significant fluctuation in ambient and surface temperatures, resulting in an increased number of pothole repair requests this winter season.
Staff will use 567 tonnes of asphalt to combat the effects of winter weather on Regional roads. Road operations staff perform regular patrols on Regional roads to inspect them.
The following projects are upcoming with a target to start construction in fall 2022 or spring 2023:
- Montrose Road (Regional Road 98) from Grassy brooks to Lyon’s Creek Road (Regional Road 47)
- Casablanca Boulevard (Regional Road 10) from Main Street (Regional Road 81) to North Service Road (Regional Road 39)
- Niagara Stone Road (Regional Road 55) from Four Mile Creek Road (Regional Road 100) to East West Line
