Man charged with sexual assault after situation on Merritt Island in Welland

A man was charged with sexual assault after a young teenage woman told police of an encounter on Merritt Island in Welland on August 26.

Niagara Police were called to a hospital at 1:30 pm by staff after the teen arrived and told them of the situation.

After talking to the young (under 18) woman, the police determined she was assaulted and went to Merritt Island to look for evidence.

While there, they saw a man fitting the description given by the woman and found evidence of the crime at the scene.

Police have charged Aaron Jacob Davis, 40, of no fixed address with sexual assault.

Davis was held in custody and will attend a video bail hearing to the Robert S. K. Welch Court House in St. Catharines today.

Continuing to investigate this inciden, police learned that following the alleged sexual assault, the victim sought help from a man and woman who had been walking on the Merritt Island trails. 

The unknown man and woman gave the victim a ride in a car from the scene to get help.  Police are hoping to identify and speak to these two witnesses.  No further information is currently available for the two witnesses.
