Man surrenders to police five hours after uttering threats in Niagara Falls

A man has been arrested for uttering threats after being asked to leave a residential building in Niagara Falls.

On Saturday (Jun. 17) around 3 p.m., police were called to a residential building in the area of Buchanan Ave/ Kitchener St in the City of Niagara Falls.

Officers say they were informed that a man began uttering threats after being asked to leave the building.

According to investigators, due to the nature of the threats, the area was contained and the Emergency Task Unit (ETU) along with negotiators were dispatched to assist with the situation.

Nearly five hours later, the man surrendered himself to police.

35-year-old Kidus Dawit of Niagara Falls faces multiple charges including:

• Uttering Threats, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
• Failing to comply with probation contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

Police say, Dawit is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in the City of St. Catharines.
