A Manitoba man has been charged and a Niagara Falls man remains in hospital after a serious traffic collision yesterday (June 14) in Niagara Falls.

Police were called to the Lundy’s Lane and Highland Ave. intersection at 9:50 pm and found  a 33-year-old man from Niagara Falls seriously injured after the collision. He was quickly treated and shuttled to the hospital where he remains.

After investigating, the police determined the accident was caused by the other driver, who drove through a traffic stop, slamming into the first car. The hit caused both vehicles to roll with the first driver knocking down a traffic signal pole.

The vehicle that caused the accidents rolled into a nearby building. The driver then claimed to be a passenger, saying the driver had run away.

Police contacted their Real Time Operation Centre that operates a multitude of cameras throughout the Region and personnel at the RTOC confirmed the man was, in fact, the driver. The police also quickly confirmed they believed he was impaired.

A 31-year-old man from Iles Des Chenes, Manitoba was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance by alcohol causing bodily harm and impaired driving, exceeding the legal blood alcohol level.

The driver was held in custody for a video bail hearing at the courthouse in St. Catharines today (June 15).

Damage was considerable to both vehicles as the victim’s car sustained $30,000 and the suspect’s vehicle seeing $50,000 worth of repairs. Roads in the area were closed during the investigation and re-opened at 2:10 am.
