The Peterborough County Detachment of the OPP say that a Montreal man is facing charges after a spike belt was used to stop an allegedly stolen rental car that went missing from the Niagara area.

Police say that on Aug. 2, officers were told that an individual who claimed to be from the car rental company made off with a vehicle after claiming he was there to repair it.

According to police, the rental company was able to locate the vehicle with its tracking system.

The driver of the stolen vehicle left the Niagara area and travelled along the 401. Police say Northumberland OPP members attempted to stop the vehicle using a spike belt, but the accused drove around it. The driver also evaded police in the Hastings area.

The spike belt was again deployed in Peterborough on County Road 45 and the vehicle was stopped.

Police allege the driver attempted to flee, but was eventually caught and taken into custody.

A 38-year-old Montreal man has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, fleeing from a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime and more.

The accused was held for bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4.
