Deaths related to COVID-19 in Niagara Region have now hit 581, adding more than a dozen fatalities in roughly 10 days.
The ongoing daily cases are now sitting at 1,066, up considerably from a few weeks back when that number was less than 500. The region has now seen 63,601 cases in total since the pandemic began in March 2020.
At this moment, there are 80 Niagara residents hospitalized due to the virus – four of those in the ICU. Of that 80, 29 are primarily in the hospital for COVID-19 while 51 are being treated primarily for other conditions.
It couldn’t happen at a less opportune time as Niagara Health has 98 doctors, nurses and other staff members off work due to COVID-19.
As is evident in the chart below, showing the last two weeks of daily cases, even when things look good, such as 15 new cases on July 23, two days later, that skyrocketed to 113 cases.
