Murdered Welland man identified by police

Police have identified a male adult who was found with life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital on Tuesday (Sept. 17) in Welland.

Niagara Regional Police have identified the male as 24-year-old Mathew Theal of Welland.

“Residents can expect a continued police presence in the area while Homicide detectives and the Forensic Services Unit continue the investigation,” said Niagara police.

A teen is facing second-degree murder charges in connection to the death Theal.

Paramedics and police responded to a home in the Broadway and Pietz Avenue area around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Niagara Regional Police said.

A man with life-threatening injuries was found in the home, police said.

Police said the man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sommer E. Etherden, 19, of Welland was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, police said.
