Welland got a taste of the federal campaign trail yesterday (September 15) when NDP leader Jagmeet Singh stopped in to give Niagara Centre NDP candidate Melissa McGlashan a boost.
During the whistlestop drop-by at the CUPE Local 1263 on Major Street, Singh emphasized to the boisterous crowd that strategic voting wasn’t always the best approach.
“There is a cost of voting for Mr. Trudeau. There is absolutely a cost of voting for Mr. O’Toole. He agrees with Mr. Trudeau on a number of things. They are both opposed to pharmacare. They are both opposed to removing profit out of long-term care.”
Recent polls show Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Erin O’Toole deadlocked with roughly 34 per cent of the voters’ support while Singh’s NDP are a distant third at about 20 per cent.
McGlashan is hoping to unseat two-time incumbent Liberal Vance Badawey on September 20 while Conservative Graham Speck, Green Party’s Kurtis McCartney and People’s Party Michael Kimmons round out the Niagara Centre candidates.
