new apartment building proposed niagara-on-the-lake

A new apartment building could be coming to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

According to a recent staff report, a new three-storey apartment with 12 units and 24 parking spaces has been proposed for a site located at 61 Melville St.

The subject lands are located in the Melville Street and Richard Street areas, close to the water and not far from the Queen’s Landing Hotel. As of now, the site is home to the King George III Inn, an eight-room inn with on-site parking.

According to the report, which is set to come before council this evening, applications to amend zoning and official plan rules to permit the development were approved last fall.

At an Oct. 3 planning meeting, staff agreed to provide council with a report detailing some questions raised, including those surrounding site lighting, shadowing, snow storage, landscaping and parking layout.

The report says the site plan approval application for the development was deemed complete and circulated for comments to staff and other relevant agencies on June 28.

According to the report, a stage 3 archaeological assessment was recommended and is ongoing, with another report expected in the near future.

The report says the site plan application is still under review and the proposed apartment has not yet been approved.
