Niagara Region seems to be back to its seesaw ways when it comes to new COVID-19 cases.

However, the ongoing cases, hovering nearly 1,000 cases just a month ago, seem to want to stay higher these days.

Saturday (April 2) started off a four day stretch poorly with 116 cases, the second highest number of the past month (eclipsed only by April 1 with 138 new known cases) but then the numbers took a tumble on April 3, dropping considerably to 44 new cases.

By yesterday (April 4), they fell further still, down to just 24 cases, the lowest in a month. That didn’t last, mind you, as they were back up to 56 new known cases today.

However, what seem troublesome is that the ongoing case numbers are staying somewhat high in Niagara Region. While they are close to 1,000 a month ago, they are presently sitting at 1,217 and the Niagara health unit is indicating these numbers are definitely an underestimation.

Before Omicron hit Niagara in December, resolved cases were far outpacing new ones. That would appear not to be the case anymore and the region is now getting cases more quickly than they are going away.

At the moment, 527 Niagara residents have passed away from COVID-19 since the pandemic started in March 2020.
