Niagara College adds more electric car chargers to both campuses

Knowing that students will be the leading edge of the electric-hybrid car movement in the future, both the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake campuses of Niagara College have added additional chargers.
Six new chargers were added to the Welland campus’ Lot G – they’ll be online two weeks from now by September 26 – while the busiest Niagara-on-the-Lake campus now has 14 chargers in front of the Marotta Family Innovation Complex.
Both the students and the federal government made the new chargers possible, getting funding from both the Green Economy Canada and the Niagara College Student Administrative Council.
“Through the addition of these new EV charging stations, Niagara College hopes to support community members who own or are considering electric and hybrid vehicles,” said Brian Hughes, acting Senior Director, Facilities Management.
“This is one way the College is investing in green technology to make our campuses more sustainable.”
The school has rates that make a 45-minute charge free for students but if they leave it parked at the charger after that, it’s $5/hour.
“This is to ensure that spaces are available for those who need it,” the college said. “Drivers are asked to kindly move their vehicle out of the EV charging space once their battery has reached full charge.”
For staff, it’s $1/hour for the initial charge but also $5/hour if the car is left there. For visitors, the initial charge is $3 but $10/hour if the car is still parked there.
