In a ceremony at Niagara Falls City Hall yesterday (September 1), Mayor Jim Diodati revealed that Council had voted unanimously that September was being proclaimed as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month”.

“For the month of September, we fly the gold ribbon remembrance flag to recognize and support the importance of childhood cancer research,” said Diodati.

He added that little is known about what causes childhood cancer, limiting the opportunities for prevention.

“With only five cents from every cancer research dollar going towards childhood cancer research,” Diodati said. “Sadly, over 800 children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer each year in Canada.”

Finally, he added that on September 6, Niagara Falls would be illuminated in gold from 9 to 10 pm in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
