If you were planning to catch the fireworks in Niagara Falls tonight, you might be disappointed to hear that poor air quality has prompted Niagara Falls Tourism to cancel the display.

In a news release, the organization said it was cancelling tonight’s (June 30) display due to the impact of wildfires on air quality in the area.

A special air quality statement is currently in effect for Niagara Falls and all parts of the Niagara region, as well as a host of other regions throughout Ontario.

Environment Canada says smoke plumes from forest fires over northeastern Ontario and Quebec are creating deteriorated air quality for the second time this month.

The smoke could linger into Saturday morning.

“Due to the impact of wildfires and the associated air quality advisories in many areas of Canada, including in Niagara, the Niagara Falls Fireworks program is being suspended for Friday, June 30, 2023,” Niagara Falls Tourism said in a statement.

That said, the organization expects fireworks to continue as planned over the Canada Day long weekend.

“The much anticipated 9-minute extended fireworks show to celebrate Canada Day on July 1st and American Independence Day on July 4th are planned to proceed as scheduled,” the organization said.

“The Niagara Falls Fireworks stakeholders acknowledge the sacrifice that residents, firefighters, members of the military and first responders are making in dealing with the unprecedented issue of wildfire impact.”
