Niagara Falls man busted in theft of war-time statue from local cemetery

One man has been charged with the theft of a historically significant war-time statue from the Drummond Hill Cemetery on Lundy’s Lane near Drummond Road in Niagara Falls.
At the time of theft of the statue of Lieutenant General Drummond – between the mornings of September 27 and 29 – Niagara Police surmised it would have been “labour intensive, possibly involving a vehicle to transport the statue.”
Yesterday (October 7), one Niagara Falls man was charged while the Niagara Police believe there is at least one other suspect.
If not more since the statue (photos below) is roughly three feet long, three feet high and about a foot wide. Besides being awkward, it is also 330 pounds and placed on top of a concrete pedestal that is more than five feet high.
Police added the statue still has not been found.
Shawn Matthew Mayhew, 43, of Niagara Falls has been charged with theft over $5000, failure to comply with undertaking and failure to comply with probation.
Niagara Police added a tactic used by metal thieves to deceive or hide evidence is to cut the stolen metal item into smaller pieces so that it can be transported and sold off easier.
Members of the public and particularly scrap metal recyclers are asked to be on the lookout for the statue.
