While Niagara Falls alone netted more than $1.15 million, Mayor Jim Diodati was happy to see some $6.7 million in total land back in Niagara Region as the Province pumped out its 2022 portion of the gas tax cash to municipalities with transit service.
“As a thriving cultural centre and gateway to international border crossings and the GTHA, Niagara region relies on dependable, efficient and accessible public transit,” said Diodati.
“This funding from the provincial government will support the community of Niagara Falls transportation needs, while strengthening supply chains in a trade corridor that is vital to Ontario’s success.”
The Ontario government gave out more than $379.5 million to help 107 municipalities operate and improve local transit. The funding is being delivered through the gas tax program and can be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.
In the end, six Niagara municipalities plus the region itself all received gas tax cash.
Fort Erie was given $216,989 while Niagara Falls collected $1,154,169. Some $123,265 was sent to Niagara-on-the-Lake while St. Catharines added $1,996,616 to its coffers. Welland netted $536,738 followed by Thorold with $215,997.
Niagara Region, now in charge of the region-wide service started in 2023, saw itself get $2,456,104 in total.
