While their social media makes no mention of it either on Twitter or Facebook, Niagara Furniture Bank has quietly closed their Ontario St front door, leaving only a note that says, “Temporarily Closed. Please do not leave any donations at this time.”

The bank, which gave donated furniture and appliances to those in need, registered as a charity in January 2008 and has been serving the community since that time.

Their clients were referred to them by Ontario Works, the Ontario Disability Support Program, local health units and family and children services.

By 2009, they got their first truck and helped 43 families in need of furniture.

Ten year later, in 2019, they had helped 704 families and individuals in Niagara, repurposing over 500,000 pounds of gently-used goods that would have gone directly to landfill sites.

The bank said they closed their doors on May 13 due to the pandemic, unforeseen circumstances and financial hardship. Whether they reopen remains to be seen.
