Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Betty Disero was joined by Shirley Madsen and Finn Madsen and their granddaughter Savannah Nedeljkovic to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day

The Ukraine flag found its way back up the flagpole at Niagara-on-the-Lake today (August 24) to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day.

Independence Day of Ukraine is the main state holiday in modern Ukraine, celebrated on August 24 in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence of 1991.

That flag has been flown on that municipal pole before.

On February 25, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Niagara-on-the-Lake was one of many municipalities throwing their support to the country.

On that day, the town said, “The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake stands with the people of Ukraine and extends a plea for peace to those imposing harm and violence against them. The news we have observed coming from Ukraine is devastating.”

“We stand with Ukrainians worldwide, those experiencing these horrific actions, and those watching and hearing the disturbing news reports. The destruction is severe, and the actions taken against Ukraine are unwarranted.”
