The Niagara OPP stopped a handful of speeding vehicles in a school zone at Highway 58 and Coronation Dr this morning (June 1) and laid “multiple charges.”
For the record, the school zone speed limit in Ontario ranges between 30 and 40 km/h.
“However, it’s still important to drive with care at all times when in school zones. Kids can be present after school hours and on weekends,” said the MTO on its website.
“Slow down and always check for posted signs to reduce your speed and prevent last-minute braking.”
As it is, the speeders are about to pay the piper as fines are up to 60 per cent higher in a school zone. How much over the speed limit a driver was going will determine if they face other penalties or charges.
As low as 20km/h over, a driver could accumulate demerit points.
The fine for a speeding ticket in a school zone scales upward rapidly. While 10km/h over equals $95, 20km/h over will net a $180 fine plus three demerits. Driving 30km/h over is a $450 fine plus four demerits while 40km/h over is a $595 plus four demerits.
