Niagara Police charge man with impaired after car hits pedestrian in Niagara Falls

Niagara Police have charged a driver with impaired driving, among other charges, after an elderly man was struck while walking on the shoulder of the road in Niagara Falls yesterday (January 6).

Police came to the scene at 6:30 pm near Drummond Road and Summer Street and found that a 78-year-old man, who was walking northbound on Drummond, had been hit by a car.

The car didn’t go far, careening off the road and hitting a tree, but the driver took off on foot. EMS shuttled the injured man to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Roughly a half hour later, police found the driver in the Portage Road and North Street area.

James Carrier, 66, of Niagara Falls was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused bodily harm, operating a car while prohibited, impaired driving, exceeding the legal blood alcohol level and using a plate not authorized for vehicle.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place today (January 7).
