Niagara Police looking for 40 more auxiliary members

After being stopped cold by the pandemic for more than a year, Niagara Police has reopened their Auxiliary Officer Program and a recruitment drive has begun.
Police say auxiliary members provide a very valuable volunteer service to both the police and the community.
“Each member receives extensive training relating to the powers and duties of a police officer including Criminal Code and Provincial Offences Legislation, Use of Force, First Aid and CPR, Search and Rescue and Traffic Control,” the police said in a release.
At the moment, Niagara Police have about 75 auxiliary members and are looking for another 40 to start their training in 2022.
To be certain, auxiliary members do not have police powers. However, in situations where the Niagara Police need more officers to control a special event, disaster or other emergency situations assessed by the Chief of Police, auxiliary officers may be given the same arrest authority as police officers.
For the most part, it’s issues of crowd control at an event or concert. For more information or to fill out an application, click: https://www.niagarapolice.ca/en/careers-and-opportunities/auxiliaryprogram.aspx
