Two Niagara Regional Police officers were cleared of criminal offense in connection with a police stand off that left a 32-year-old man with a broken foot at Niagara Falls.
On March 9, 2023, authorities received a distress call regarding a man in mental distress who was armed with a knife.
The man had barricaded himself inside a house, prompting a response from law enforcement.
After approximately five hours of negotiations with the individual, the police made the decision to forcefully enter into the house and subsequently entered the bedroom where the man was located.
In an attempt to evade capture, the man fled the scene and tried to jump across from his room onto the roof of a nearby structure, when he lost his footing. Which lead to him breaking his right foot.
The 32-year-old was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for medical treatment and a psychiatric evaluation.
Special Investigations Unit Director Joseph Martino confirmed that after conducting a comprehensive investigation, he found no reasonable grounds to support the belief that the police officers involved committed a criminal offense.
