While it’s far from ideal, the three cases of Monkeypox currently in the Niagara Region is a fairly low number compared to some Ontario regions.

In nearby Hamilton, they are dealing with 11 cases while both Halton and Durham Region are showing nine.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit has been hit much harder with 13 cases while the Ottawa Public Health is dealing with 36.

Sadly, the Toronto Public Health unit has been slammed with the virus, currently dealing with 359 case, the majority of Ontario’s total at 478.

On the positive side, there has been zero fatalities and just 15 people admitted to the hospital province-wide.

Public Health Ontario notes, “Although cases have mostly been identified among males who report sexual or intimate contact with other males, anyone can get monkeypox.”

“Various factors that may increase the potential risk for exposure include close, sexual, and/or other intimate contact with someone who has a monkeypox rash, sore, or scabs.”

The overwhelming majority of the cases are male with 475 of them while there have only been three cases with women.

Some 430 of the cases are between the ages of 20 and 49 years old.
