Niagara Region resident scammed out of cash in fake lottery win

A Niagara Region resident was scammed out of more than $5,000 after they were called and told they won a multimillion dollar prize.
A joint investigation between the Niagara Police and the Caledon OPP learned the victim got a phone call saying they had won the huge prize.
They were then instructed that they needed to mail in a processing fee to claim the prize to a specific address. The victim did precisely that and before long received a second call saying more money had to be mailed in.
At this point, the Niagara victim got suspicious and called the police.
After the joint investigation, the police arrested Donna Gordon-Allen, 53, of Caledon, and charged her with fraud over $5,000.
Niagara Police would like to remind residents of the following tips:
*Never send money to anybody you don’t know and trust
*Don’t provide personal banking details to anyone that you do not know and trust
*Any lottery or sweepstakes requiring upfront fees is a scam
*If you didn’t enter a contest, you didn’t win – no matter what you may be told
*If congratulations come with a cheque – with instructions to deposit it and send a portion back – the cheque is fake
