Niagara Region top doc suggests if restrictions are aimed at the unvaccinated, COVID-19’s fourth wave will subside

During a long Twitter post yesterday (August 27), Niagara Region Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr Mustafa Hirji floated the idea that perhaps centering restrictions on the unvaccinated might bring the Fourth Wave of COVID-19 to a stop sooner.

Suggesting two options of reducing the wave, Hirji said, “Either get vaccinations higher or restrict social activity (e.g. lockdown). But if cases are mostly in the unvaccinated, we need to restrict activity in unvaxxed people.”

He suggested this would have a two-fold benefit. Saying the health offices in all Ontario regions would like to see vaccine passports, he added, “It lets us restrict social activity where COVID-19 is spreading (the unvaccinated) and avoid a full lockdown.”

And he believes it might be the big incentive the unvaccinated need to finally go get their shots.

The numbers bear him out. Ontario released figures today that 85.7 per cent of all cases in provincial ICUs are unvaccinated.

Further to that, the unvaccinated total 76.5 per cent of all COVID-19 cases that are presently in Ontario hospitals.
