Nunavut wins territory’s first-ever gold medal at Thorold sports centre

When Nunavut wrestler Eekeeluak Avalak won the territory’s first-ever gold medal at the Canada Games, it was more than just a victory for his home.

It was also a victory he dedicated to his late brother, Joanasie, who would have turned 27 this week.

And based on the crowd’s roar and standing ovation when he won, it was also a victory for spectators.

“I didn’t see myself winning no medal,” said a drained Avalak after he won in the wrestling 52-kg (114 pounds) weight class at the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre in Thorold yesterday (August 11).

“I just came to compete and have fun and here I am the first Inuk from Nunavut to win a gold medal at the Canada Summer Games. I’m just so happy.”

Immediately after his win, he jumped into the arms of his coach Chris Crook, who he called his “father figure.”

As for his brother, who sadly committed suicide in 2015, Avalek took the opportunity to wish him happy birthday. “Happy belated birthday to a special person up in heaven. This is for you, and I know you’re watching over me and I love you brother.”

Nunavut first sent a team to the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, Ont. Its only medal before yesterday was a bronze in judo at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse.

Avalek was also chosen as the territory’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies.

History’s been made
