Niagara police have identified an 84-year-old man who died in hospital 12 days after a hit-and-run collision in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Police say that Nestor Chemerika succumbed to his injuries on July 25.

On July 13, Chemerika was struck by a truck while riding a bicycle on East West Line at Concession 2. The injured man was discovered lying in a north-side drainage ditch by officers who were on a routine patrol.

Police say after the collision, which happened at about 7:50 pm, a pewter coloured 1999 GMC Sierra pick-up truck that officers have since seized took off, turning onto southbound Concession 2 Rd. Police say it travelled to York Rd., where it turned west into the St. Davids area.

Once in St. Davids, the GMC turned south onto Four Mile Creek Rd. and headed into Niagara Falls.

Police say the truck has been repaired following the incident. The repairs included a grill, passenger-side headlights, and a passenger-side view mirror. All are used GMC parts.

Police are asking auto part recycling businesses or wreck yards in the Niagara area to report any similar sales of used GMC auto parts since July 13. They are also asking body shops in the area that potentially did the repairs to contact them.

Officers are also asking any residents or businesses with closed-circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras to review their footage for the suspect vehicle for the period between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm.

Finally, since they now have the truck and will have their forensic unit combing through it, they are asking the driver to contact a lawyer “and arrange for a safe and peaceful surrender.”

Police say Chemerika’s family is asking for privacy during this difficult time.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009089.
