Recent attacks throughout Niagara Region has heightened the need for members of the public to fight back and show they are not afraid.

That’s the rationale behind the Take Back the Night March that will take place in St. Catharines n September 15.

Organized by the Niagara Sexual Assault Centre, those who take part will walk through downtown area in a united call to end harassment and violence against women.

Because of the pandemic the march has not been held for more than two years, but otherwise the event has a long history in Niagara going back almost 40 years when similar events began to take place globally.

And the timing  of the march couldn’t be better as recent incidents show there are still many crimes taking place.

  • On September 3 a woman was stabbed near Eastwood Cr. and Ontario Ave. in Niagara Falls
  • July 9 police responded to a report that woman was suffering gunshot wounds in the Dorchester Rd. area of Niagara Falls
  • In June a person in St. Catharines was charged with human trafficking a teenage girl
  • Also in June, A St. Catharines woman was attacked in the parking lot of a shopping mall
  • On May 25 a teenage girl was stabbed during incident near Edith and St. Paul St. in St. Catharines

Several other incidents have also been reported during the past few months.

Take Back the Night will begin at 7 p.m. at the Market Square Building with guest speakers followed by the march through the streets of St. Catharines at 8 p.m.
