Aficionados of the long-running American TV show “The Office” will, of course, remember Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly’s Niagara Falls wedding.

All the show’s main characters were invited to pair’s TV wedding in Niagara Falls. But, of course, it was Niagara Falls, New York… not Canada.

Because it was a TV sitcom, of course, the pre-wedding sees one hilarious disaster after another in the two-part episodes aired in Season Six, simply entitled “Niagara”.

To relieve the stress of it all, the characters, played by John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer, actually get married aboard the Maid of the Mist II so that they don’t care if their invited-guest wedding continues to have calamity followed by mishap followed by disaster, which, of course, it does.

Hair drenched, the happy couple look at the American Falls on the left and the Horseshoe Falls, far right.

To the newlyweds, the pressure was already taken off after they sneak off to be married by the Maid of the Mist captain, something Jim secretly planned as a fall-back.

So can a Maid of the Mist captain actually marry people in real life as they do in TV Land?

As it turns out, yes, though that depends on the captain. Keep in mind it’s the captain’s job to keep everyone safe in the falls so they might not have time to marry passengers.

However, should one be willing, it has to be booked in advance and the marriage licence ($40 in the U.S., $100 in Canada) must be purchased more than 24 hours in advance.

So are they in American waters or Canadian waters? Who can tell?

The single question remains. Did Jim and Pam get married in American waters or Canadian waters?

The Maid of the Mists crosses the border regularly on ever tour. Though cartoons disagree, there is no dotted white line separating the countries floating on top of the water.

Maid of the Mist captains start in their own port, cross Lake Ontario and do a U-turn back to their original post. They perhaps have a vague idea of which countries water they’re are situated but again, they have more pressing concerns.

The rest of The Office cast pose at Jim and Pam’s wedding (though they are already married.)
