City of Welland fire officials remind residents they could be fined up to $5,000 for setting off fireworks on public property over the Labour Day weekend.
Such activity is only allowed in the city, and across the Niagara region, leading up to and on Victoria Day in May and Canada Day in July.
“It’s important to remember that what is entertaining to some can be bothersome to others,” said Welland Fire Chief Adam Eckhart. “We want people to enjoy the holiday safely, at the same time respecting the rules and their neighbours.”
Fire officials clarify that fireworks are not to be ignited in any parks, open fields or other public spaces.
“Using fireworks in dry conditions and around combustible services can cause a fire and put people and property in danger,” City officials said in a release. “The person who lights the fireworks is responsible for the damages that may occur.”
Anyone who violates the bylaw can face a maximum fine of $5,000.
Residents who want to file a complaint about fireworks as they are happening this weekend can do so anonymously by calling 9-1-1 and asking for the fire department to respond.
When using fireworks legally, and on your own property, residents are reminded of safety tips that include: buying fireworks from a reliable source; following directions on fireworks labels; having quick access to a water source; using fireworks outdoors only; lighting one firework at a time, and not during strong winds; keeping fireworks out of the hands of children; and wearing eye protection while setting fireworks off.
