Drivers can expect extended day-long road closures this Sunday (Sept. 17) when the Niagara Falls Barrelman Triathlon takes over streets from the starting line in Welland to the finish line in Niagara Falls.

Barrelman Niagara Falls, one of the largest events of its kind in North America, serves as a unique opportunity to share the stunning views and landscapes across Niagara Parks and the entire Niagara region with over 9,000 athletes and their families each year.

The race starts in Welland in the Welland International Flatwater Centre and finishes at Kingsbridge Park in Niagara Falls.

However, the triathlon will see some major road closures in the Niagara Falls area as participants will swim, bike, and run, completing over 110 kilometers of road and river across the Niagara region in this annual event.

From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., there will be a full closure of the Niagara Parkway from Upper Rapids Boulevard, south to the Portage Road intersection at Macklem Street, as well as a single southbound lane closure of the Niagara Parkway from Fraser Hill to Upper Rapids Boulevard.

Access to Dufferin Islands, including access via Burning Springs Hill Road, will be closed to all vehicular traffic.

There will also be lane closures along Portage Road, including Chippawa’s Weightman Bridge, which may begin as early as 6 a.m. and will be fully re-opened by 7 p.m. as the final participants complete the course.

Additional road closures within the City of Niagara Falls may be in effect during this event, causing delays. For updates, please visit niagarafalls.ca.
