While St. Catharines placed 21st on a list of Best Cities in Canada To Create a Start-Up, it also vaulted up 154 places in the rankings on an international level.

When Hellosafe.ca did a poll of the Canadian startup ecosystem, only three Canadian cities – Toronto (23rd), Vancouver (41st) and Montreal (44th) – landed in the Top-50 internationally.

While St. Catharines landed 21st on the Canadian list of 40 cities, it was well back internationally at 552nd best in the world. However, that shifted the Garden City up 154 places from 2022 when it was ranked at 706th best.

Startup Blink’s annual ranking of the best countries and cities for startups is based on three sets of criteria, updated each year, which allows this organization to establish a top 100 of the best countries and a Top-1000 of the best cities for startups in the world.

The three sets of criteria are the quantity of start-ups, the quality of each and the local business environment.

“This dynamism of the Canadian startup ecosystems is again verified through the Startup Blink 2023 best countries for startups ranking, where Canada appears to be fourth, just behind the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel. This means Canada is ahead of countries such as France, Germany or China,” said the study.
