St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik announced today that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik revealed today (April 5) that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

“With symptoms developing over the last 24 hours, I was tested regularly (showing negative) until this morning when a rapid test confirmed I had contracted the virus,” he said on social media.

Sendzik said so far, ” I am only experienced mild symptoms. I am very grateful that I am double vaccinated with a booster.”

The mayor assured constituents that he will be following public health guidelines and the City’s protocols regarding COVID-19 and isolating and working from home for a minimum of five days from when symptoms started.

“I will return to City Hall when I am able to provide a negative test.”

He used his case as an example that “we are far from being beyond COVID-19. Don’t fall into a false sense of security: please take the time and following the appropriate guidelines to protect your health and that of your family, friends and co-workers.”

He also asked, “Please continue to wear a mask in public settings and if you are showing symptoms – please stay home and get tested.”
