St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens would like to see the Pride flag raised at every publicly-funded school in Ontario.

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens says simply condemning the actions of the homophobia and transphobia people is not enough.

She wants to see the Pride flag raised at every single publicly-funded school in Ontario as a message to people in the LGBTQ+ community that they are both loved and supported against the current rise of hatred against them.

Referring to the motion put forth by two Niagara Catholic District School Board trustees to reverse the board’s two year old Pride flag policy, Stevens said she was happy to see the board itself wasn’t in agreement.

“The Niagara Catholic School Board Director of Education did the right thing by condemning the motion from two trustees, but the community needs more,” said Stevens.

But words alone are not enough, she continued.

“It is no longer enough for politicians in the month of June to just condemn violence with words only. Our support needs to be shown every month, and it needs to be done with real action,” she said.

“My message to the (LGBTQ+) community is this: you are safe, you are loved, and we will do everything in our power to make that clear.  Prejudice has no home in Niagara.”
