St. Catharines neighbourhood has high COVID-19 rate of over 23%

One St. Catharines neighbourhood is currently in the province’s top 50 for high COVID-19 positivity rates.

Toronto-based research group ICES listed the top 50 postal codes in Ontario with high COVID-19 positivity for the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 5

One is in St. Catharines: Postal code L2W, which is reporting 23.08% positivity.

L2W is the postal code with the 38th highest COVID-19 positivity in Ontario.

Despite this area’s high positivity, COVID cases are generally trending downwards for most of the region, with more than half of Niagara municipalities now at 100 or less COVID-19 cases.

According to ICES, Ontario’s overall positivity for the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 5 has fallen to 13.4% (down 1.2% from last week), with 367 postal codes reporting positivity of 10% or higher (down 46 from last week).

ICES also says case counts reported since December 31, 2021 represent an underestimate of the true number of individuals with COVID-19, due to changes in eligibility for SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing.

Highlights

For the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, Niagara Region had the 12th highest COVID-19 positivity out of Ontario’s 34 public health units (PHUs), reporting 16.64% positivity.

The province overall is listed 24th at 13.42% positivity.
