St Catharines seeks residents to operate outdoor skating rinks

If residents want to build and maintain an outdoor rink for their neighbourhood parks in St Catharine, they have two days left to apply. That deadline is October 1.
The city has a Community Outdoor Ice Rink Pilot Project to help residents get set up for the upcoming skating season.
However, what they need is volunteer groups to build, operate and maintain outdoor ice rinks in City-owned parks.
“Outdoor ice rinks that are driven by the community help build civic pride, promote healthy lifestyles, and truly make St. Catharines a place where everyone can play.”
Interested volunteer groups can now apply to operate a rink for the 2021-2022 season via our EngageSTC application page.
COVID-19 Safety Requirements:
- Maintain physical separation of two metres with others
- Masks or face covering are strongly recommended
- Participants must adhere to provincial gathering limits
- Sports, such as hockey, are currently prohibited
The City said while it provides the space, “the operation is ultimately the responsibility of community groups who applied to host a rink under the program, including the safe operation of the rinks. The City remains committed to ensuring community groups are supported in these efforts and continues to engage with these dedicated community members on shifting restrictions, including prohibitions on hockey.”
All members of the community are welcome to enjoy the outdoor ice rinks when open. Rink availability is weather dependent and may change frequently.
