Thorold man charged after speeding off from officer in St. Catharines

A routine traffic stop in St. Catharines yesterday (June 16) morning turned into a runaway car chase that ended when the driver hit a concrete pole.

Yesterday at 8:45 am, a Niagara Police officer spotted a Cadillac driving through a stop sign in the Woodrow Street and Dunvegan Road area of the city.

Pulling the car over, the male driver couldn’t produce a driver’s licence and then gave the officer a false name and date of birth. When the officer continued to question the driver, he threw his car in drive and took off.

That turned out to be a bad idea as he then hit a marked police cruiser, narrowly missed a pedestrian walking on Dunvegan Road and finally hit a concrete support pole with his Caddy.

With the car totalled, he then ran into some nearby woods.

A number of officers came to the scene and at 9 am, he was found and arrested without argument near Carriage Road and Rampart Drive.

Once the police found out his identity, it turned out his Ontario driver’s licence was suspended and has was also wanted for failing to comply with a release order and failing to comply with probation.

Corey Randolph Davidson, 24, of Thorold has been charged with obstructing a peace officer, flight from the police, dangerous driving, failing to comply with his probation order, disobeying a stop sign, driving while under suspension and failing to remain at the scene.

He was held in custody and will attend a video bail hearing at the courthouse in St. Catharines today (June 17).
